"Sandows," as seen by Amélie du Passage

Amélie du Passage is the founder of Petite Friture, one of the most inspiring publishing houses in contemporary French design.

Since its founding in 2009, the company has championed a vision in which creative boldness, high standards of craftsmanship, and a commitment to sustainability go hand in hand.

To mark the reissue of the Sandows collection, created by René Herbst, Amélie du Passage looks back at the reasons behind this decision.

Please describe and define the Sandows collection, as well as the distinctive features of these chairs.

Amélie du Passage: “The Collection Sandows, designed by René Herbst beginning in 1927, is distinguished by a chrome-plated steel tubing combined with Sandow elastic bands Tensioned straps that ensure both aesthetics and comfort. Its minimalist, graphic, and timeless design embodies the principles of the modernist movement: clean lines, technical innovation, ergonomics, and functionality. Despite its apparent visual rigidity, the seat offers surprising comfort thanks to the flexibility of the tension straps. “

How did you come to choose René Herbst? What do you like about his work?

Amélie du Passage: “René Herbst was the obvious choice because the collection Sandows complements Petite Friture’s contemporary DNA so naturally. Iadmire his modernist approach, rooted in a minimalist aesthetic, social consciousness, and a focus on the user. It is alsothecreative boldness of René Herbst, his leading role within the Union of Modern Artists (UAM), and the enduring modernity of his designsthat led me to choose this designer.”

What are the differences between developing an object conceived by a contemporary designer and one based on archival material?

Amélie du Passage: “The main difference lies in the lack of direct dialogue with the designer. While archives and rights holders provide valuable information, they cannot replace the exchanges that allow us to fully grasp the creative intentions. The work of reissuing a design also requires discreetly adapting the object to industrial constraints, current standards, and changing uses, while faithfully respecting the spirit of the original work.”
