Vitra – Legendary design

A family business, Vitra’s history began when founders Willi and Erika Fehlbaum discovered the chairs designed by Charles & Ray Eames on a trip to the USA, and from then on formed a long and friendly relationship. One thing led to another, and the company went on to sign some of the greatest iconic creations: Vitra helped write the history of 20th-century design.

Now legendary, the publishing house treats classics as contemporary products from another era, exciting us as if we were there for the first time.

The spotlight is on auteur design, shaping your interior with furniture made to last.

At Vitra, eco-responsibility is not a matter of intention, but of action. Each piece of furniture is designed to last, to be repaired and to be passed on. From the selection of materials to logistics, the brand adopts a global approach that combines innovation, transparency and circularity. A concrete commitment, structured around three pillars.

Spring luncheon

With the return of fine weather, windows open and fresh air circulates through the house once again. Balconies, terraces and gardens once again become meeting places, spaces where we like to gather as soon as the light softens. Family meals, work sessions in the sun, quiet reading or a simple moment of relaxation: spring invites us to reinvent our daily lives outside, without ever giving up comfort.

To accompany this transition, Vitra revisits its great classics, highlights its latest designs and dresses its pieces in fresher colors. A way of rediscovering chairs that seem familiar… while subtly renewing the look of a space, right from the first glance.

Setting course for chairs

The great classics evolve smoothly, without ever betraying their original silhouette. The Eames Shell Chairs, now enhanced with the iconic  The FondaThis new range brings a sculptural presence to the table, indoors and out. In the same vein, colors gain in freshness and accompany the fine weather: luminous, vibrant, they interact with natural light and breathe new energy into already familiar shapes.

Alongside them, the Eames low armchair is the perfect ally for changing spaces: easy to move, it follows the day, from reading corner to balcony, from living room to terrace.

At a time when well-sourced, well-thought-out objects are becoming more and more expensive, Vitra is opening this season with a strong gesture to democratize the Eames collections with a price cut: the same quality for a new accessibility.

Timeless icons are also present: on its designer’s 100th birthday, the fluid Panton Chair asserts its audacity, while models by Jean Prouvé celebrate the balance between constructive rigor and essential elegance.

Finally, contemporary lines complete the spring scene: the Belleville chair, graphic and light, and the Tip Ton chair, recognizable by its forward tilt, illustrate this Vitra signature: combining innovation, comfort and modernity, without losing sight of timelessness.

Formal engineering of Eames legs

At Vitra, Eames chairs are distinguished by a fundamental principle: one shell, several frame architectures. This modularity, conceived as early as the 1950s by Charles & Ray Eames, enables the seat to be adapted to a variety of uses while subtly transforming its silhouette.

The welded-wire base – often nicknamed the “Eiffel Tower” – expresses remarkable technical virtuosity. Its interlacing metalwork creates a structure that is both stable and visually light, particularly striking on the Wire Chair DKLwhose transparency is a dialogue with space. The more sober four-legged base asserts a rational, functional presence, ideal around a table. The wooden versions, meanwhile, introduce a more organic dimension, playing on the contrast between industrial modernity and domestic warmth.

Vitra’s latest development, the Fonda base. La Fonda enriches the collection with a more statutory base. Resized for contemporary table heights, it offers an elegant, structured seat, reinterpreting the Eames heritage with a perfectly contemporary aptness.

Outdoor collections

As soon as spring arrives, the boundaries between indoors and outdoors become blurred. The Vitra outdoor collections create a continuous space. Vitra sees the home as a personal collage, reflecting the personality of its inhabitants. To enrich the convivial experience, tables, chairs and accessories, combined with delicious food and a beautiful table arrangement, create a warm atmosphere where guests can enjoy the long summer evenings.

A commitment to sustainable design

Design Vitra

01

Innovative, eco-friendly materials

At Vitra, innovation also means rethinking materials. The brand has embarked on a genuine shift in favor of more sustainable materials, derived from the circular economy or designed to limit their impact.

Plastic, a major environmental issue, is now systematically recycled post-consumer, whether from domestic or industrial waste. Finishes follow the same high standards: the lacquers used are water- or powder-based, with no solvents or toxic emissions, to preserve air quality and limit volatile compounds. Leather is selected according to strict criteria: chrome-free vegetable tanning, natural dyes, and recycling of scraps, which are reused in everyday objects. Textiles, meanwhile, are favored when made from natural or renewable fibers, such as wool or cotton.

Finally, in partnership with BASF, Vitra has developed an innovative foam, V-foam: 100% recyclable, it is gradually replacing conventional foams in upholstery, without compromising comfort or durability.

02

Transparency & traceability

At Vitra, each piece of furniture is accompanied by precise information on its origin, composition and impact. Thanks to environmental passports, it is now possible to find out the origin of materials, their recyclability, the carbon footprint associated with each phase of the life cycle, and the types of packaging used.

Today,97% ofmaterials are sourcedin Europe, mainly in Germany, Italy and Poland. This choice reinforces traceability, reduces transport distances and guarantees production that is more consistent with today’s challenges.

Vitra also pays particular attention to the woods it uses. In addition to oak and ash, the brand is now introducing species such as cherry, chestnut and walnut from sustainably managed European forests. Veneers, particularly those used for the emblematic pieces in the Eames collection, benefit from this rigorous selection.

An approach based on clarity, enabling everyone to make a purchase with confidence.

03

Circular design

At Vitra, design is not ephemeral. It’s designed to stay with you for a long time, to adapt to your everyday life, and to last through the years without losing its beauty. It all starts at the design stage, where each product is designed to be repairable, removable and upgradeable. Covers are removable, washable or replaceable. Spare parts remain accessible, and structures are assembled without glue or lamination, to facilitate maintenance and recycling.

This principle applies equally to seats and sofas, such as Suita or Polder, designed to evolve over time. And to take things a step further, Vitra now offers Re-Place: a refurbishing service that allows you to have your furniture renovated, change the coverings, or simply give it a second life. A concrete approach to circular design, combining style, functionality and ecological awareness.

The Eames collection, always modern

The first in the Vitra catalog to be updated, the Eames collection opens a new chapter in the history of the brand’s classics. In close collaboration with the Eames family, this reinterpretation adjusts iconic models to today’s uses and sensibilities.

New materials include the introduction of new European wood species – cherry, chestnut and walnut – to enrich the existing palette, enhanced by natural matte or satin finishes that reveal the texture and grain of the wood. In the same vein, leather is now offered in a chrome-free, vegetable-tanned version, for a more authentic feel and elegant aging. The color palette has also been revisited, with hues such as Sky Blue, Sea Foam Green and Red Orange, directly inspired by the archives of Charles and Ray Eames. Emblematic pieces such as the Hang it all, theEames House Bird and the Lounge Chair have been given a new graphic lease of life.

Last but not least, this update continues the adjustments already underway: an enlarged version of the Lounge Chair, new heights for the Shell Chairs, recycled shells for the Plastic Chairs, and the return of the Fiberglass Chairs, reissued thanks to an innovative process that recovers the original shades of this collection, discontinued in 1990. All subtle updates that preserve the spirit of the Eames while projecting it into the present.

Home stories

Vitra opens the doors to two inspiring interiors where design meets the art of living. Lhe iconic publisher celebrates the warmth of lived-in homes, where furniture becomes the reflection of a personal story. Two worlds, two sensibilities, but the same philosophy: that of sincere, authentic and functional design, supported by Vitra creations. Vitra. Between heritage and contemporaneity, these Home Stories remind us that a successful interior isn’t just about not just a question of harmony, gesture and life.

Vera Köller & Lukas Cober: a raw, luminous sanctuary

At the edge of the forest, Vera Köller and Lukas Cober have given new life to an old miner’s house in Belgium. Together, they have fashioned an interior in their own image: radical, sensory and deeply rooted in matter. Here, concrete rubs shoulders with raw wood, polished surfaces respond to the shifting shadows of outdoor foliage. Between craftsmanship and design, every detail reflects a quest for authenticity.

The surgeon and artist-designer have conceived their home as a living studio. Nothing is static: walls breathe, objects interact, time sculpts volumes. Vitra pieces – a Standard chair by Jean Prouvé, a Colour Frame mirror by Julie Richoz – slip in seamlessly, extending this language of handmade craftsmanship and poetic functionality. For Lukas, “making something” always means working with his hands; for Vera, it’s about living with awareness. Together, they cultivate a warm minimalism, where every imperfection becomes beauty.

Martina Bjorn & David Van Severen: interiors between classicism and modernity

In their Brussels home, Swedish photographer Martina Bjorn and architect David Van Severen have created a singular universe where the charm of Beaux-Arts moldings meets the precision of contemporary design. This century-old former office, transformed into a family retreat, exudes serenity and generosity. Through the interplay of volumes, light stretches across the parquet floors, caresses the Vitra furniture and reveals a subtle balance between heritage and creation.

For the couple, living means telling a story. The furniture, chosen with intuition, blends with works by friends and objects gleaned from travels. Here, nothing is left to chance: each piece embodies a gesture, an intention, an emotion. The Lounge Chair and Coconut Chair are a natural part of this intimate scenography, where beauty is never decorative, but lived in everyday life. Their home, like their approach to design, rejects contrast in favor of harmony – the harmony of a home conceived as an archipelago of memories and living materials.

Designers

Vitra maintains a close relationship with its designers. It’s a co-creative work that is honored through each original. Initiated by the friendship between Vitra founder Willi Fehlbaum and the legendary Charles & Ray Eames, the publishing house pays close attention to the designers’ creative desires, transcending them to create projects that will live on. The most striking example is the Panton chair, a real challenge considered impossible to realize in 1950, and which, 17 years later, was an immediate success! Design d’auteur.
